A decade ago - long before I started writing poetry ~ I became obsessed with how the sunlight works its way through trees.  I took hundreds of terrible pictures over three years on the light would sneak through whatever spaces it could find to reach me. 

This morning - as I sat overwhelmed with life while sitting on a park bench  - a sunbeam came from across the cosmos to give me the softest of juicy smooches on my forehead - these words fell out of my heart.  

It was a memory wrapped in a vision covered in grace.  It was the first time I remember being seduced by sunlight.

                             ***

when I was twelve I tried to
go golfing with my brother

but I got hit
the head with a club and
it split open my little skull
like a trembling
       California fault line
